Smoothie King Racism Claim Has 2 Stores Indefinitely Shuttered
Smoothie King has closed two of it’s stores in North Carolina after employees at both locations were accused of using racist language to describe their customers.
The first incident occurred at the Mt. Holly-Huntersville Road location in Charlotte, NC. In a since-deleted tweet, the niece of the first customer tweeted the following:
Smoothie King took to their twitter to let everyone know that the employee in question had been terminated.
Update: we have terminated this employee and will continue to look into this situation.— Smoothie King (@SmoothieKing) June 3, 2019
They went on to respond to the first party:
This employee has been terminated by the franchisee. The store will be closed until the franchisees and their respective teams complete further training on our standards and to ensure that nothing like this occurs again.— Smoothie King (@SmoothieKing) June 4, 2019
The story would normally end there- However, just hours later, at an additional Charlotte location of the Smoothie King franchise, another customer had a similar experience when, after visiting the location with his children, a Korean-American man named Tony Choi, wrote on facebook: “Today I left this store furious on the inside, trying to not let my young kids know what just happened, But the 3 employees working there at the time couldn’t stop laughing about it.”
The employees had written “Jackie Chan” on the receipt. (Pic Below)
In response to these horrible incidents, Smoothie King went on the offensive, fired the employees and shuttered the stores so they could proactively focus on retraining the staff. In a tweet, the franchiser responded:
We have zero tolerance for any action where a guest is disrespected and sincerely apologize. Both team members have been terminated by their respective franchisees and the stores will be closed until further training has been completed.— Smoothie King (@SmoothieKing) June 4, 2019
The Smoothie King Racism claim has been dealt with swiftly, and we hope all parties can come to a conclusion, amicably and that retraining will help.
